No Sodium Taco Seasoning

Taco night feels harmless. It's just a little packet, right?

One packet of regular store-bought taco seasoning — the kind that flavors one pound of ground meat — carries roughly 2,280mg of sodium. My whole day is 1,500mg. The packet was taco night's whole problem.

But the real reason I mix my own goes back to chemo. The treatments messed with my taste buds — food tasted flat, and I wanted dinner with a lot of flavor. One night I was out of Mrs. Dash and had to create my own from the spice rack. It was bold, it was good, and I've never gone back to a packet.

10 minutes, pennies, and one batch fills a jar — 2 tablespoons per pound of meat, same as a packet — at 3mg.

One trap to know: chili powder. Some brands blend salt right into it — my husband caught one in our own kitchen, salt third on the ingredient list. Read the label before it goes in your jar.

And I still keep a Dash salt-free packet in my own pantry — for the nights I'm just too tired and out of energy. No shame in it; low spoons are real. The ones I'd skip are the "30% less sodium" packets — they still run about 330mg a serving. Less than a lot is still a lot.
